World Homelessness Day brings people together to highlight the needs of people experiencing homelessness and ways to get involved in preventing homelessness. On Friday 10th October, Hackney Night Shelter will be hosting our annual sponsored Sleep Out at St John of Jerusalem church garden.
Just by sleeping and asking people to sponsor you can help Hackney Night Shelter stay open 365 nights a year for people like our guest, K, who said:
“it was my lifeline and I got to get my head and my life together in a safe place, and got so much support and the opportunity to turn my life around.”
On 10 October we'll spend the night under the stars in the churchyard of St John of Jerusalem. There’ll be hot soup, music and good company before we bed down until dawn when we head to the nearby community centre for a cooked breakfast.
This is in no way replicating homeless people’s actual experience of rough sleeping but it’s an important fundraising moment for our work. We pay no rent on our main shelter and it is primarily run by volunteers, but we still need to meet some essential costs - to continue providing emergency shelter for people in need.
